Pepper spray can be a very effective self-defense weapon for women. The major advantages of pepper spray are that it is easy to use, carry, and renders attackers defenseless in seconds.
However, in order to use it effectively, you need to do your homework. While most advertisers would like you to think that it is simply point and shoot at the attacker, it can be much more difficult than it seems. So here are seven tips on how to more effectively use pepper spray.
When you first buy your unit, go out in the backyard and give it a spray. See how the unit feels in your hand, and how far the burst reaches. Don't let the first time you use it be during an attack.
2. Read the Directions
It may sound obvious, but read the directions on the package. Often this will contain product specific tips and techniques on how to more effectively use pepper spray.
3. Watch the Expiration Date
Pepper spray loses is effectiveness over time, which is why you should replace your items on a regular basis. All of your item should have expiration dates on them.
4. Point it at the Face
This is another obvious point, but is often forgotten in stressful situations. This chemical only works when it comes into contact with the face, so that is where you should aim.
5. Buy Multiple Ones
You should keep one pepper spray in your purse, one in your car, and one in your office desk.
6. Use Common Sense
The best self-defense advice is to simply use common sense. Not even the best self-defense weapon on the planet will protect you if you do not follow basic common sense.
7. Take a Self-defense Course
There are many self-defense courses offered at YMCAs, community centers and martial arts centers. Try and find a course that fits your skill level.
